The Last Suppers is the fourth installment
in the Goldy Bear series. Goldy Bear is about to become Goldy
Schulz, or so she thinks... Goldy is at the church, in her wedding
silk suit, the dinner she catered is taken care of by Julian and
other helpers: everything is ready... Only the groom and the priest,
Ted Olson, are missing. A moment later, Goldy gets a phone call from
Schulz: he went to pick up Father Olson and found him dead with shot
wounds. The wedding must be canceled...
Schulz, who was supposed to meet Goldy at the church, is not coming.
Soon, Boyd, another police officer, comes to her with bad news: it
looks like the killer was still at Father Olson's when Schulz called
Goldy, and now, Schulz has disappeared, in all appearance
kidnapped... Goldy, instead of a much-deserved three-days honeymoon,
has to face worries for the fate of her beloved, as well as
disbelief and curiosity from the guests, who wonder if Schulz's
prolonged absence is not a case of cold feet.
The Last Supper is another look into
the small community of Aspen Meadows, Colorado, where petty
jalousies and nasty gossips cohabit with a strong sense of
solidarity. This time, the story concentrates on the Episcopalian
community which seems a really fascinating environment: between
clashes opposing traditionalists and amateurs of folk music and
hugging in church, heated debates about alleged miracles, and
contested examinations of candidates for ordination, Goldy doesn't
know where to begin to look, and this time, the stakes are high,
since it is Tom's life on the line...
The Last Supper is my favorite Goldy
novel so far, even though I kept wondering why Goldy always refer to
her future husband as Tom Schulz and not just Tom. I thought the
intrigue was really interesting, and Mott-Davidson does not digress
too much from it in the course of the novel. The cooking parts were
shorter and fewer than in previous novels, which suited me too. As
usual some mouth-watering recipes, such as the Lemon Butter Wafers,
Chocolate Truffle Cheesecake or Portobello Mushrooms Stuffed with
Grilled Chicken, Pesto, and Sun-dried Tomatoes). I really have to
try one of these once...
