A woman wakes up in the dark, tied, thirsty and
famished. She doesn't know what happened to her. She remembers that
her name is Abbie Devereaux, that she has a job and a boyfriend. But
how she came to be kidnapped and by whom she doesn't remember. Her
kidnapper claims to have killed other woman before
her, and says her turn will come soon... Luckily,
Abbie manages to escape, she runs away without looking back and when
the police arrives, she is unable to find the place where she was
held captive. The nightmare is just beginning... Soon people begin
to doubt her story and she is sent home without protection.
Except, where is home? Abbie starts to
realize that, during the days that her memory can't figure out, she
made a lot of changes in her life. Who was Abbie just before she was
kidnapped? And, mostly, who kidnapped her? Is he still after her?
Abbie will have to follow the tracks left by her lost self to find
the truth...
The first Nicci French I read (Nicci French
are indeed two people, husband and wife, writing together...) was
Killing Me Softly, which I found badly written, but extremely
suspenseful. I liked The Safe House and The Memory Game
was ok, but after reading Beneath the Skin and The Red
Room, both which I found very weak, I thought I would not be
reading any more of their books. Well, I changed my mind and decided
to give a try to Land of the Living. It was pretty good,
Nicci French's style gets better (I don't know which of them
actually does the writing...) and the story held my attention, it
was gripping and well-paced. Unfortunately, I found the ending
pretty disappointing. The story had a good start, the basic idea
(loss of memory of days preceding a kidnapping) is full of
potential, but I was expecting a more twisted outcome.
