Grace Lawson has a happy marriage and two great
children, and she is also a pretty successful artist. She has
everything she can dream of, and only the memory of a tragedy
that happened to her when she was 21 and left her limping shadows her
dreams sometimes. One day, after she picks up photographs at the
shop, she finds one that does not belong to the set: five
young people, two young men and three young women are on it. She
recognizes one of them; it is a younger version of her husband Jack.
When she shows the photograph to Jack, he has a strange reaction: he
becomes very still, shocked, and then denies that it is him. Later, without saying anything to Grace, he leaves with the
car... and does not come back. Grace,
worried, goes to the police, only to find out that they think she is
a hysterical wife whose husband just decided to leave her for
another woman. But Grace knows her husband (or does she?) and cannot
believe that. In a race against time and a very ruthless and skilled
killer, and with the help of a hardly recommendable relation, she
will do everything in her power to find her missing husband...
Just One Look is another roller-coaster
ride by Harlan Coben. I had to finish the last 150 pages or so in
just one sitting, reading way past my usual bed time. Just One
Look skillfully deals with the themes of responsibility and
guilt, and final twists will not let you find the whole truth until
the very last pages. Clever plotting and quite unpredictable ending,
with, as usual, on the low side, the strings of credibility
stretched to the max.
All in all, a very, very unputdownable
thriller...
