Matt Hunter is a happily married man whose wife
is pregnant. His life has not always been so fulfilling: when
he was in college, he accidentally killed another student in
a fight. He spent eight years in prison, and decided never to be on
the wrong side of the law again. But fate might decide
differently... One day, while his wife
is on a business trip, Matt receives two strange messages from her
cell phone: one is a photograph of a man, and the other, a video of
a woman with a wig, sitting on a bed, waiting for the man to join her.
Matt is quite convinced that the woman with a wig is his wife
Olivia. He is about to see his life shattered for the second time,
and asks the help of a woman private investigator of his
acquaintance. Meanwhile, an apparently unrelated event involves a
woman detective, Loren Muse : a nun has been found dead in a catholic
convent nearby. Surprisingly, she has silicon-augmented breasts...
As usual, Harlan Coben has crafted a very
twisted mystery, with just too many twists and coincidences in my
opinion. I thought he was trying to hard to fit everything together,
and the ending is really over the top. I also had
more difficulty than usual getting into the novel, but that may be because for
a while, I could only read for stretches of 10-15 minutes, and
Harlan Coben's novels are typically the ones one likes to read in
one or two sittings. Still a decent suspense, but I wouldn't call it Coben's best, as many
other readers seem to do. For me the best (so far) is
Just One Look.
