When caterer Goldy Bear provides food for the
College Advisory Dinner for Senior and Parents, she expects that a
lot of things might go wrong except this: as she is ready to pack
and leave for home, she finds the battered corpse of Keith Andrews,
the school valedictorian, on the Headmaster's property.
Badly shaken, Goldy, who has become familiar with
crime in her past adventures, calls her boyfriend Detective Tom
Schulz, with whom she has an increasingly serious relationship: he
has even popped the question... Goldy, whose past experience at
marriage with John Richard Korman (The Jerk) was a disaster, is
hesitant to make such a commitment again...
In the paranoid atmosphere surrounding the
death of the top student, many questions arise such as who would
want to kill a student? Goldy soon learns that he ambitioned to be a
journalist and was about to denounce something big in the local
newspaper. Could it be what prompted somebody to kill him? Julian, a
young man living with the Bears and learning Goldy's craft, was just
behind Keith in terms of grades: he soon becomes one of the main
suspects. Moreover, somebody seems to be threatening Goldy and her
son Arch: could it be that she knows something she shouldn't? As
students, encouraged by their parents, compete for being accepted in
the best universities, Tom Schulz, with the occasional help of
Goldy, tries to solve the mysteries disrupting the usually quiet
life of Aspen Meadows...
As with the two previous Gold Bear culinary
mysteries, I enjoyed myself thoroughly reading about the gossipy
town and its various inhabitants. Even if the mystery itself is a
bit light, and the recipes rather heavy (The Nachos Schulz
sure seemed yummy, though...) I am looking forward to reading The
Last Suppers, the next Goldy's mystery...
